Silver Clef Names Oasis As Icons
Outspoken British band Oasis have picked up a lifetime achievement award at the Silver Clef awards at a charity lunch at the Park Lane Hilton in London.
Oasis won the 2008 Icon Award, which has previously been awarded to The Jam's mod pioneer Paul Weller, Irish rockers U2 and Scottish crooner Rod Stewart.
Other Silver Clef winners were The Fratellis, who were named best British band, and Amy MacDonald, who was named newcomer of the year.
Canadian singer-songwriter Bryan Adams took home the Ambassador of Rock prize, while the International Award went to Meat Loaf.
Last year's ceremony saw Snow Patrol win best British group and Bryan Ferry named Ambassador of Rock.
Earlier this year, Oasis were honoured with a Brit Award for outstanding contribution to music. The Manchester band shot to fame in 1994 and were at the forefront of the Britpop scene which saw the return of guitar music to the UK charts. Their third record, Be Here Now, became the fastest-selling album in British chart history when it was released in 1997.
No Friends On The Big Screen
Warner Bros has snuffed out persistent rumors that a movie version of the long-running sitcom Friends is on the cards.
The rumors have intensified ever since Sex and The City became a box office smash. The film took in US$55.7 million at the north American box office in its first weekend, a record for an R-rated comedy.
Some British newspapers reported that the Friends, Jennifer Aniston, Courtney Cox Arquette, Lisa Kudrow, David Schwimmer, Matthew Perry and Matt LeBlanc, had agreed to their own film and shooting could start in late 2009.
However, a spokesperson for Warner Bros in Britain says there is "no truth in the story". Cox Arquette's publicist, John Fogelman, also told the BBC he did not know of any plans for a film, while Matthew Perry's spokesperson, Lisa Kasteler, said: "Nothing is happening in this regard, so the rumor is false."
The final episode of Friends drew an American audience of 52.5 million. |
